Happy Birthday, AB baby!

Junior Bachchan turns 33 today. We take a look at his Bollywood journey over the years.

Abhishek was born on February 5, 1976. He attended Bombay Scottish and Jamnabai School in Mumbai before going to Switzerland's prestigious Aiglon College. From the Swiss Alps, he moved to Boston University but left his education mid-way to pursue a career in acting and help his father with ABCL which was in the doldrums

Abhishek debuted alongside Kareena Kapoor in JP Dutta's Refugee in 2000. The film flopped but Abhishek's performance was appreciated. Many more flops like Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya, Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai, Mein Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, Kuch Na Kaho and Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost followed though Abhishek had developed quite a fan following by then. Zameen in which he co-starred with Ajay Devgan and Bipasha Basu was a decent success.
2004 was the year that changed the shape of Abhishek's dwindling career. He won accolades for his performance as a misguided uneducated young man and his crackling chemistry with Rani Mukerji in Mani Ratnam's Yuva. Then came the blockbuster Dhoom in which he played a tough cop opposite John's biker bad boy character. Abhishek's sensitive performance of a lawyer in Phir Milenge was appreciated and his item, One Love in Rakht became a smash hit. RGV's Naach didn't do anything of his career as people thought it was too advanced for its time.

2005 was another successful year for AB Jr. and strengthened his position as a bankable and sensitive actor. There was comic caper Bunty aur Babli with Rani Mukerji, followed by the powerful Sarkar with Senior AB and the very entertaining Bluffmaster with Priyanka Chopra. He also made several special appearances that year.

Bachchan had 3 releases in 2006, out of which Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna which teamed him with his father and Rani Mukerji yet again and action flick Dhoom 2 in which he shared screen space with Bipasha, Aishwarya and Hrithik were super hits. Umrao Jaan flopped but Guru was another breakthrough performance in his career. He had matured immensely as an actor and shared some sparkling chemistry with fiancée Aishwarya on screen. Mani Ratnam's film was a commercial success too. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom flopped while Shootout at Lokhandwala in which he had a special appearance was a big hit.

He had three big releases last year. People thought he was too fat to play a super hero as a result of which the loosely directed special effects adventure Drona bombed at the BO. Sarkar Raj which teamed him with his Bachchan Senior and wife Ash was an average success. Dostana in which he played a gay character with aplomb and displayed some fantastic comic timing and chemistry with John Abraham was a smashing success.

Abhishek has won 3 Filmfare awards in his career and he and John recently won the Star Screen award for Best on Screen Jodi for Dostana. He is known as an intense, brooding, layered and sensitive actor who is very good at comedy as well.

On the personal front, Abhishek got engaged to Karisma Kapoor in 2002 but the engagement was called off in 2003. He was linked to a series of actresses like Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji and Dipannita Sharma but he strongly denied these rumours. He began dating his Dhoom 2 co-star Aishwarya Rai in early 2006 and the two got married on April 20, 2007. They are fondly referred to as 'AbhiAsh'

Abhishek is currently filming for Mani Ratnam's Raavan with wife Ash. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi 6 is his next release in which Sonam Kapoor is his co-star. We wish him a very Happy Birthday and many joyful and successful years to come.
